2016 News

7th January 2016

Following the end of our most successful showing year ever (see 2015 NEWS page) we rounded off the season with a prize in every class entered in the Midland Longhorn Breeders Herd Competition, with both our leading show prizewinners, Gorse Violet (1st prize yearling heifer and cup for the best overall heifer) and Gentons 007 James Bond (1st prize junior bull) winning their large classes.   It was also most satisfying to win the club's points cup for the 2015 Summer show season.

We ended last year with the sale of four cows and two heifers to start a new Longhorn herd in Gloucestershire and another cow to strengthen an existing herd in Oxfordshire.   The numbers will soon recover with two calves on the ground already and another 25 to calve in the next three months

An interesting visit last month from a breeder of Boran cattle in South Africa.   He keeps 500 cows in one herd on one unfenced block of land which means that the calves, which are born all the year round, have to be DNA tested to establish which of the bulls is the sire.      Those in this country suffering from the excessive rainfall that we have been experiencing will be interested to know that they are suffering a severe drought.   The grass, which should be almost waist high at this time of the year (South African Summer), is only a couple of inches high and the herd has to be driven 5Km daily to water and back again.

Pre-Movement test yesterday cleared the way for the sale of twelve Longhorn steers.   We shall be taking six on Saturday 12th March and another six on 26th March to Worcester Market.   (see STOCK FOR SALE page)   Half the cows have now calved, including three to James Bond (see last years NEWS page), so he will get most of the cows this year before he goes back to Mr Facon.

12th May 2016

A successful visit to the Longhorn Cattle Society Spring Show and Sale last month.   Our yearling heifer GORSE WINNIE, a GORSE UNCLE GARY daughter, being judged Reserve Female Champion and Reserve Overall Champion and selling for 1,500 gns to David Howden for his POINTER  herd.

Nearly all the cows have now calved and are running with GENTONS 007 JAMES BOND to get a crop of calves by the Longhorn Cattle Society 2015 Bull of the Year before he goes back to his breeder, Bertie Facon
