Longhorn Cattle

The "Gorse" Longhorn herd was started in 1966 and, as No 33, is now the oldest privately owned herd in the Herd Book. The herd numbered 20 cows, all of which are home bred, which calve in the Spring but, following a virtual dispersal sale in August 2018, for health reasons, the herd is much reduced.   Only the very best male calves are reared as bulls, the steers were finished at home but now are sold as stores at Worcester Market in the Spring.

Heifers not required for herd replacements are sold at the Society sales or at home privately (see under STOCK FOR SALE). Over the years our stock has become much sought after and we currently hold the breed record price for a senior heifer, GORSE LAYLA selling for 3,700 gns at the Society's Worcester Sale in 2006.    This has been surpassed by the sale of an in-calf heifer, GORSE WINEGUM, at the Society's Autumn Sale 2017 for 3,800 gns, having been breed champion at both the Royal Bath and West and Royal Three Counties shows earlier that Summer.   But these were put in the shade by GORSE ROSA with G.ZELDA ROSE at foot selling for a breed record of 12,000 gns at the virtual dispersal (see below)

Unfortunately was necessary to drastically cut numbers so a virtual dispersal was held on Saturday 18th August 2018.   See report on 2018 NEWS page.

We have retained four cows, representing the four main families in the herd, together with two cows we felt were too old for the sale.   Being unable to keep the numbers we used to, the herd will be pegged at this level so there will always be a small number of females and, probably a young bull or two for sale.   Having always vaccinated for BVD, Lepto and IBR, we have now signed up to the SAC Premium Cattle Health Scheme for these diseases and added Johnes disease following the necessary blood tests.
